Because this is not just about whether the translation is accurate. It is about something deeper: what society is prepared to accept as access.

The promise is seductive: an app that never sleeps, never needs paying, never says no. For governments and corporations, it’s perfect; a one-stop solution to centuries of exclusion, all for less than the cost of a human interpreter. Efficiency dressed up as equality.

But here is the uncomfortable truth: an AI Sign Language interpreter is not access. It is a downgrade disguised as progress. It takes the complexity of Deaf culture, the richness of hundreds of sign languages, the individuality of each signer and compresses it into something an algorithm can process.

In doing so, it doesn’t just risk mistakes. It risks redefining the very idea of enough. What would never be acceptable for the hearing majority; a cancer diagnosis delivered by cartoon avatar, courtroom testimony voiced by a machine is being positioned as “good enough” for Deaf communities.

That is not inclusion.

That is exclusion, hidden behind the glow of innovation.

The Promise That Sells

The pitch sounds flawless. No interpreter shortages. No scheduling headaches. No spiralling costs. A single AI system, always on, ready to serve Deaf people anywhere, any time. For governments and corporations, it is irresistible: universal, scalable, efficient.

But here’s the truth nobody wants to admit: this “solution” doesn’t sell because it empowers Deaf people. It sells because it relieves institutions of responsibility. It reduces access to a budget line. It lets decision-makers tick a compliance box, declare “job done,” and move on without ever having to face the messy, relational, human work that real inclusion demands.

From my background in technology, I know how tempting it is to treat communication like code. To see it as data that can be standardised, automated, and scaled, like shipping containers or lines of software. AI interpreters make it feel exactly like that; a commodity, stripped of its depth.

And that is why the promise is so fragile, and so dangerous. Because once inclusion is reduced to a product, the thing that gets optimised isn’t accuracy, empathy, or safety; it’s cost. And the things that get sacrificed are the very foundations Deaf people have fought for: humanity, trust, cultural richness, and the right to be understood on our own terms.

On paper, AI Sign Language interpreters look like revolution. In practice, they risk becoming the cheapest substitute society thinks it can get away with.

Where AI “interpreters” are already being planned and piloted

This isn’t theory. It’s happening right now; funded, tested, and quietly normalised, especially in transport and public information.

  • UK rail: AI-BSL announcement trials have already taken place, with operators publicly signalling intent to extend across entire networks after what they describe as “positive feedback.” The technology is framed as a scalable, one-size-fits-all access fix.

  • Metropolitan rail network: Avatar-based BSL systems have been piloted to deliver live station information, presented as modernising passenger communication.

  • Government funding: Public money has been channelled via national innovation competitions into avatar-based BSL projects, pushing travel information directly to passengers’ devices.

  • Airports (US): One airport installed AI sign-language boards for gate and delay updates. Initially hailed as a breakthrough, it quietly faded out as a short-term innovation trial rather than a sustainable service.

The pattern is impossible to ignore.

These systems slip in through the side door; routine announcements, timetables, platform changes. On the surface, they seem harmless. But procurement logic doesn’t stop at routine.

Once the infrastructure is in place, efficiency drives expansion: from ordinary updates to urgent alerts, from platform changes to evacuations. That is exactly where mistranslation, latency, or cultural flattening stop being irritations and start becoming life-threatening.

The critical point is this: pilots may look small, experimental, even cosmetic. But every trial lays the groundwork for permanence. Once contracts are signed and systems embedded, scope creep is inevitable. Tools are re-scoped into contexts they were “never intended” for precisely the ones where mistakes have the highest human cost.

“Not for medical or legal” and why that line doesn’t protect us

Vendors and buyers often reassure: “We won’t use this for medical or legal.” On the surface, it sounds responsible. In practice, it’s meaningless.

Because once a system is procured, it stops being a toy. It becomes infrastructure. And infrastructure does not stay in its lane. What starts as “just for announcements” gets re-scoped: “only for alerts,” “only if an interpreter can’t be found.”Exactly the creep Deaf-led organisations have been warning about.

The danger isn’t what vendors claim today. It’s what procurement systems will demand tomorrow.

I remember standing at a train station during rush hour. The air was thick with sound; tannoy announcements clashing, footsteps pounding on concrete, the low rumble of trains sliding in and out. People around me moved with certainty, almost instinctively. A voice called out a platform change and the crowd shifted as one, flowing like water in the right direction.

And then there was me. Profoundly Deaf, in a world built for hearing.

My so-called “accessible option” was a screen tucked off to the side, spitting out lines of text. But the text didn’t match the words that were filling the air. Delays. Safety warnings. Urgent changes. All spoken, none displayed. To the casual observer, it looked like progress. To me, it was decoration. Inclusion for show.

The stress wasn’t just about missing words. It was about living in a constant state of doubt. I scanned faces for sudden shifts. I copied the crowd’s movements without knowing why. I calculated risks with every heartbeat: Was this train safe to board? Was there a delay? Was I already missing something everyone else had heard? Every second became survival maths.

That’s why AI sign language interpreters terrify me. They don’t erase that uncertainty; they multiply it. A machine might give me a translation, but I would still be forced to question: Was that accurate? Did it capture urgency? What if it softened the danger? What if everyone else has already moved and I’m still standing there, trusting a machine that failed me?

Instead of clarity, AI risks layering doubt upon doubt. One kind of uncertainty (what did the announcement say?) gets replaced by another (did the machine interpret it correctly?). But the environment doesn’t change. The unequal architecture of the world stays the same. I am still the last to know.

That is the illusion: accessibility that looks impressive to outsiders, but in reality leaves nothing changed except the reminder of how exhausting it is to live in a world that congratulates itself for including me, while still keeping me behind.

Language Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

Here’s what most people never stop to consider: there is no such thing as “sign language.” There are over 200 distinct sign languages worldwide, each with its own grammar, idioms, histories, and cultural depth. They are not copies of spoken languages; they are full languages in their own right.

Even within a single language like British Sign Language, the diversity is striking. The sign for “birthday” in London looks nothing like the one in Glasgow.

Generational differences exist too: younger signers often use different vocabulary or stylistic choices than older signers. Deaf communities are as linguistically and culturally varied as hearing communities yet this fact is invisible to most outsiders.

AI interpreters cannot capture that richness. They are trained on narrow datasets often drawn from staged, limited, urban-centric material and reduce all of that variety into a single artificial “standard.” This isn’t genuine innovation. It risks flattening living languages into something machine-friendly, stripping away depth and diversity.

It’s like building an English–French translator trained only on Parisian textbooks, then demanding it interpret Quebecois slang, Shakespearean sonnets, Jamaican patois, and Glaswegian dialect with equal accuracy. The result would be absurd. Yet this is exactly what AI attempts to do with sign languages: flatten the richness of lived, local, cultural expression into something the model can process.

The result isn’t access. It’s distortion dressed as inclusion.

And here lies the most dangerous myth: that AI interpreters can represent all Deaf people equally. To believe that is to assume:

  • One single, standardised sign language (false).

  • One uniform cultural context (false).

  • One predictable way Deaf people mix signing, fingerspelling, mouthing, and written language (false).

This kind of flattening is not a harmless shortcut. It is erasure. It reduces Deaf people to data points, stripping away the regional, generational, and cultural richness that make sign languages thrive.

Worse, over time Deaf people may feel pressured to adjust their natural language to fit the machine; simplifying, flattening, and standardising to be understood by code.

In other words, it is not the AI adapting to us. It is us being forced to adapt to it. That is not access.

That is assimilation by algorithm.

What Interpreters Really Do

Most people imagine interpreting as little more than swapping words between languages. But interpreting is not a mechanical transaction. It is a deeply human safeguard;; one that protects meaning, protects dignity, and, at times, protects lives.

And I want to be clear: I know AI interpreters are not yet embedded in hospitals, courts, or child protection as mentioned above.

That’s why we need to think about it now. Technology doesn’t stay neatly in the box where it begins. Once piloted in “low-risk” spaces like rail or airports, the logic of cost-cutting and efficiency pushes it into higher-stakes domains.

What starts as convenience becomes infrastructure, and infrastructure spreads into places it was “never meant to go.” That’s the danger. So imagine these settings not as hypotheticals, but as warnings:

In hospital. A Deaf woman signs something that could mean “pain” or “discomfort.” A human interpreter doesn’t guess; they pause, clarify, and check. That single repair can mean the difference between correct treatment and a misdiagnosis that harms or kills. AI cannot pause. It will always output something, whether it is accurate or not.

With children. A Deaf child gestures fear that isn’t captured in any dataset. A human interpreter recognises the silence, the hesitation, the body language, and voices the fear with urgency. AI has no concept of silence as meaning. It would see nothing, and the disclosure would vanish.

In public spaces. At a busy station, an avatar signs a platform change or safety alert. To outsiders, it looks like access. But the translation lags, the urgency is flattened, and the crowd has already moved before the Deaf passenger has the message. On an ordinary day, that means being stranded. In an emergency, it could mean being trapped.

In court. A Deaf defendant testifies calmly and with conviction. A human interpreter voices that authority so the jury hears it as intended. An AI renders it flat, robotic, monotone. Suddenly the testimony sounds uncertain, hesitant. And the verdict is swayed not by evidence, but by tone lost in translation. Each example shows the same uncomfortable truth: interpreting is not about producing words; it is about safeguarding meaning where human consequences are at stake. That’s why human interpreters do far more than “translate”:

Relational safety. They build trust. Trust is why a survivor discloses abuse, why a patient admits hidden symptoms, why someone dares to say “no.” Without trust, communication collapses. AI doesn’t build trust; it extracts data.

Negotiation & repair. Humans constantly check: “Do you mean this literally, or figuratively?” “Do you mean this in the medical sense?” They negotiate meaning so small cracks don’t grow into catastrophic errors. AI never negotiates. It assumes.

Cultural bridgework. Deaf culture does not map neatly onto spoken culture. Interpreters don’t just transfer words; they transfer worlds. They explain what is untranslatable, carry nuance, adjust tone, and fight for clarity when systems fail. AI translates literally and sometimes, literal kills.

Accountability. Human interpreters hold authority. They can stop the process and say: “This isn’t clear, we need to go back.” They protect both the Deaf person and the integrity of the system itself. AI will never stop the doctor, the judge, or the police officer. It will keep producing output, even when it is dangerously wrong.

The bigger picture: the risk isn’t just mistranslation. It’s the loss of these safeguards; the invisible protections that keep people safe, dignified, and understood.

  • Interpreters don’t just convert language.

  • They protect meaning.

  • They protect trust.

  • They protect lives.

  • Machines do none of these things.

And they never will.

The Systemic Risks Nobody Wants to Talk About

The most dangerous thing about AI interpreters is that their failures don’t look like failures.

If your computer freezes, you know it.

But say when an AI mistranslates “no allergies” as “allergies,” the doctor doesn’t see an error; they record it as fact. Complacency: The Access Box Is Ticked Once an AI system is installed, institutions congratulate themselves: “We’ve provided interpreting.”

Budgets shrink, compliance reports shine, and the messy, human reality of real access is erased. AI becomes a shield behind which neglect hides comfortably.

De-skilling: Shrinking the Human Safety Net Every pound spent on software is a pound not spent on training humans. The pipeline of interpreters shrinks. Skills atrophy. And when the inevitable failure comes, there are fewer professionals left to catch it.

The system becomes brittle and it is Deaf people who carry the risk.

Standardisation as Erasure AI only works by flattening. Regional dialects, generational differences, cultural richness; all squeezed until they fit the machine.

What looks like progress on a glossy procurement slide is in fact cultural erasure enforced by contract.

Accountability Gaps: When Nobody Owns the Mistake In healthcare, law, or safeguarding, a mistranslation can alter a life forever. But when it’s produced by an AI system, who is accountable? The vendor? The judge? The doctor? Right now, the answer is no one.

And that leaves Deaf people exposed in ways no hearing person would ever tolerate.

Invisible Bias, Visible Harm The datasets behind these systems are tiny compared to speech. They’re skewed toward young, urban, London-centric signers, captured in staged lab conditions. That means older signers, regional variants, natural signing styles; erased at the source.

And if you’re erased at the source, you’re erased from the so-called “access” altogether.

The Illusion of Inclusion The gravest danger isn’t even mistranslation. It’s the illusion of inclusion. AI convinces society the problem is solved. Deaf people are told they “have access,” when what they actually have is a hollow substitute. Standards slip.

And what no hearing person would ever accept; a cancer diagnosis delivered by cartoon avatar, a testimony voiced by a robot; is reframed as “good enough” for Deaf people.

Red Flags Already Raised and Ignored Deaf-led organisations like the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and WASLI have warned explicitly: signing avatars must never be used in emergencies, news, or political announcements.

Why? Because meaning depends on facial grammar, body movement, interactive repair; things avatars cannot replicate. Yet those are exactly the contexts where pilots are already being tested.

Emergencies Expose the Lie Even live TV captions with decades of refinement and human oversight; stumble under pressure. A five-second delay in an evacuation isn’t a minor inconvenience. It can kill.

If broadcast chains still falter, why should anyone trust a kiosk avatar at a train station to protect Deaf lives in a crisis?

Silence Within Silence

What makes AI BSL interpreters even more dangerous is the silence they generate within the Deaf community itself.

At first glance, it might look as though Deaf people are not resisting. But that silence is not agreement; it is the product of exclusion.

Most Deaf people have never been given the full picture. The critical debates are buried in inaccessible reports, English-only policy papers, industry briefings behind closed doors. The very systems that claim to “provide access” are the ones keeping the most important information out of reach.

The result?

Misinformation thrives. Assumptions go unchallenged. Decisions are made without those most affected ever being at the table. It looks like apathy from the outside, but in truth it is exclusion layered on exclusion; a deliberate muffling of voices under the guise of progress.

And this is the bitter irony: by withholding access to the debate itself, society denies Deaf people the chance to resist, to shape the narrative, to fight for their own future. The community is left in enforced silence while decisions about its survival are made elsewhere.

Injustice doesn’t only spread through active harm. It spreads fastest when those who stand to lose the most are kept in the dark.

“But AI is improving” yes, and…

Every time these concerns are raised, someone replies: “But AI is getting better.” And it’s true; the models are faster, smoother, more polished than before. Demos can look dazzling. But here’s the catch: better is not the same as safe.

  • Improvement is not parity. AI can perform impressively in controlled, artificial settings but still collapse under the weight of real life. A tool that looks flawless in a demo may still fail catastrophically in the very contexts that matter most: clinics, courts, emergencies. Progress in the lab does not equal safety in the world.

  • Benchmarks are misleading. The “proof” often comes from staged sentences; neat, context-free lines like “The cat sat on the mat.” But life is not a lab script. Life is messy, fast, emotional, regional, layered with humour, sarcasm, fear, and cultural nuance. That’s where meaning lives. That’s where meaning breaks.

  • Even researchers admit the gap. Academic papers themselves stress that for avatars to be truly comprehensible, they must capture non-manual signals; the facial expressions, body shifts, torso movements that carry grammar, emotion, and urgency in sign languages. These are not decorative extras. They are the difference between “I’m fine” and “I need help now.” And the uncomfortable truth is: this problem remains unsolved.

So yes, AI is improving. But let’s be honest: polishing the surface does not make it safe. A smoother avatar that still mistranslates fear, still erases dialects, still flattens testimony into monotone; that is not progress. That is simply a more convincing illusion, one that hides its dangers more effectively than before.

Innovation Must Mean Humanity, Not Its Replacement

Let me be clear: I am not against AI. I am from technology background.

I’ve seen innovation save lives, reshape industries, and open doors that once seemed permanently closed.

Used wisely, AI can absolutely help; scheduling interpreters more efficiently, generating prep materials, or producing standardised videos for routine, low-stakes announcements. Technology can support access.

But replacing human interpreters in critical spaces is not progress. It is regression; a rollback of rights disguised as innovation.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: the greatest danger is not that AI makes mistakes. The danger is that society will start calling those mistakes “good enough.”

That a mistranslation in court will be tolerated because “at least there was something.” That a robotic voice in hospital will be brushed off as “better than nothing.” That a flattened, dehumanised sign in child protection will become the new baseline. Deaf people will be quietly told: this is the standard you get.

That is not inclusion. That is a downgrade of humanity.

The real test of technology is not whether it can mimic signs convincingly. It is whether it preserves dignity, trust, and accountability. On that measure, AI interpreters; as they are being imagined today; fail completely.

Because as I keep reinforcing throughout the article - inclusion is not an algorithm.

It is a relationship. Human interpreters carry responsibility. They build trust. They negotiate meaning. They protect rights.

Machines do none of these things.

And they never will.

The Real Way Forward

Technology should play a role but as support, never as substitution. Genuine accessibility must mean:

  • Deaf-led design and governance. Not avatars designed in labs without the people they claim to serve.

  • Recognition of diversity. Not forced standardisation into machine-friendly versions of sign language.

  • Investment in human interpreters. So capacity grows alongside supportive tech, not in competition with it.

  • Clear legal accountability. Because “the system tried its best” cannot be an acceptable defence when lives are on the line.

If we get this wrong, AI won’t just misinterpret words. It will redefine what society is willing to call “access”; lowering the bar for Deaf people to a level no hearing person would ever accept.

The breakthrough won’t come from avatars. It will come from refusing to trade humanity for efficiency.

Until then, every promise of “AI inclusion” is less a vision of progress than a warning of what we stand to lose.

Why the Current Push Also Wastes Resources

There’s another uncomfortable truth: public money is being squandered. Budgets are finite. Every pound or dollar funnelled into fragile avatar pilots; systems that need endless tuning, retraining, proprietary updates is money diverted away from solutions that actually work.

The pattern is predictable: glossy pilots are trumpeted as “breakthroughs,” then quietly shelved when they prove brittle. UK rail’s FOAK-funded avatar projects and US airport trials show it clearly: funds spent chasing an illusion instead of building durable, Deaf-led systems.

  • That money could build reliable visual paging across stations.

  • It could scale real-time speech-to-text displays.

  • It could expand interpreter training pipelines.

  • It could equip frontline staff to check understanding.

Instead, it is sunk into avatars that look futuristic but solve nothing. That is not innovation.

That is access debt.

The False Comfort of “Good Enough”

This is what keeps me awake at night: AI sign language interpreters interpreters don’t need to be flawless to reshape the world. They only have to be convincing enough for governments and corporations to tick the box and declare: “Problem solved.”

And here is the shock: we are already normalising for Deaf people what would be unthinkable for anyone else.

  • Would a hearing patient ever accept a cancer diagnosis delivered by a cartoon avatar?

  • Would a hearing defendant tolerate their testimony voiced in a flat robotic monotone?

  • Would a hearing family stand quietly as evacuation instructions came only from a kiosk, with no human present?

Of course not. There would be outrage. Headlines. Lawsuits.

But for Deaf people, this is being quietly positioned as “good enough.”

That is not inclusion. That is systemic neglect, wrapped in the glossy language of innovation.

The real question is not whether AI can interpret. It is whether society is willing to reduce human rights to algorithms.
